A growing array of nonfiction picture books, appropriate for every age level, is available that addresses an expanding range of historical topics. In fact, Mann (2001) calls content reading the "star of the moment" in education. However, nonfiction picture books should be considered far more than a passing fancy. Such books are powerful tools, often highly superior to textbook material for involving students in an interactive way. They make content more accessible, learnable, and interesting. For any number of reasons, such books provide an ever-improving entry through which teachers can lead children not only to learn about history but also to understand time concepts themselves. According to Ouzts, Taylor, and Taylor (2003), books help sensitize children to themselves and others; in addition, literature can help children see solutions to problems, reduce their inner turmoil, and even dissolve many attitudinal barriers to learning. Gambrell and Morrow (2000) report that studies show a growing interest in the use of literature to evoke reader response, student voice, and discussion, which is facilitated by such books' substantive content and chronologically presented historical information. Interactive methods can help students to better understand sometimes difficult concepts embedded in such literature, particularly in nonfiction literature.
